The short story:Â The Rams outhit the Pirates 10-9 and scored the final five runs of the game, but a ninth-inning rally fell short as East Carolina used a big third inning to win the second game of the series.

- Sophomore shortstop Connor Hujsak went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, and two RBIs.
- Redshirt sophomore third baseman Tyler Locklear hit his eighth home run of the year and drew a pair of walks for three RBIs.
- Redshirt juniors Logan Amiss and Michael Haydak each collected a pair of hits and scored a run.
- Redshirt sophomore left fielder Cooper Benzin hit his fourth double of the year, and extended his hitting streak to 10 games.
- Freshmen Cade Dressler and Nick Frazier combined for 4.2 scoreless innings of relief.
- ECU's Ryder Giles earned the win on a planned staff day with 4.0 scoreless innings, while Mason Delane took the loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Pirates put together five hits to score five runs in the third inning to take the lead.
- Two throwing errors in the fourth led to two unearned runs for the Pirates, pushing the ECU advantage to 7-0.
- Hujsak led off the sixth with a home run to left, cutting the lead to 7-1.
- Dressler struck out three batters across 2.2 scoreless frames across the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings.
- Amiss led off the eighth with a single through the left side, then scored from first on Hujsak's double down the left field line.
- After redshirt junior center fielder AJ Mathis reached on a fielder's choice in the ninth, Haydak singled to right center to put a pair of Rams on base. Locklear then lifted a towering home run over the left field fence to cut the lead to 7-5.
- The Pirates recorded a groundout and a strikeout to end the VCU rally and the game.

- Locklear's home run was the 25th of his career, giving him sole possession of seventh place all-time at VCU.
- Hujsak's homer was his third of the season, and 10th of his career.
- Amiss has reached base in every game this season, a streak of 21 games. He's also recorded hits in six consecutive games, and multiple hits in four straight.
- Dressler matched his career high with three strikeouts.
