MAKE IT A DOZEN; VCU COASTS TO 12TH STRAIGHT WIN

The short story: Senior outside hitter Vicky Giommarini (Rome, Italy) registered a game-high 12 kills as VCU coasted to its 12th straight victory Friday night.

OPENING VOLLEY

  • Giommarini committed just one attacking error in 24 attempts and hit .458 for the match. She added 12 digs, a block and a service ace
  • Redshirt senior middle blocker Jaelyn Jackson (South Chesterfield, Va.) blasted five of her nine kills in the second set as VCU took command of the match. She hit .375 on the night
  • VCU also received eight kills each from seniors Kat Young (Chantilly, Va.) and Gina Tuzzolo (Newport News, Va.), as well as junior Paula Neciporuka (Kuldiga, Latvia)
  • Senior libero Madalon Simpson (Louisville, Ky.) shored up the back line for VCU with 13 digs
  • ShaLi Niu led the Patriots with nine kills

THE DIFFERENCE

  • VCU hit .345 in the match, while George Mason managed a .165 mark
  • The Rams also owned a 47-40 advantage in digs and served up four aces
  • VCU did not trail in the third set and trailed just once in the first
  • The Patriots pulled even with VCU in the second set at 16-16, but the Rams used a 6-2 burst, sparked by two kills each by Jackson and Young, to grab a 22-18 lead on the way to a 25-19 win

NOTABLE

  • With Friday's win, VCU avenged a 3-0 loss at George Mason last season, the Rams' only regular season Atlantic 10 loss the past three years. VCU is 39-2, including conference tournament play, against A-10 foes since the start of the 2017 season
  • VCU has hit .200 or better in eight straight matches
  • The Rams have won 19 consecutive sets

NEXT UP
VCU will wrap up the home portion of its schedule with a 1 p.m. match against George Washington on Sunday, Nov. 3 at the Siegel Center. The Rams' eight seniors will be honored prior to the match.
