Location: Richmond, Va. (Siegel Center)

The short story: Senior middle blocker Jasmin Sneed (San Antonio, Texas) supplied a monster performance at the net as VCU turned away a persistent La Salle club Friday night in the Atlantic 10 Conference opener for both schools.

OPENING VOLLEY

  • Sneed tied a career-high with 12 blocks. She also provided nine kills, six digs and hit .412 for the Rams
  • Senior outside hitter Vicky Giommarini (Rome, Italy) led VCU with 12 kills
  • Senior opposite Gina Tuzzolo (Newport News, Va.) added eight blocks for the Black and Gold, while graduate transfer Jaelyn Jackson (South Chesterfield, Va.) kicked in 10 kills and four blocks
  • On the back row, senior libero Madalon Simpson (Louisville, Ky.) was credited with 20 digs. She was one of three Rams to post double-digits
  • Samantha Graver led all players with 21 kills for La Salle

THE DIFFERENCE

  • Giommarini spiked four kills on six swings and Sneed contributed three blocks to spark VCU in the fifth set tiebreaker
  • The Rams used a 7-3 burst in the fifth, punctuated by back-to-back double blocks by the duo of Sneed and senior Kat Young (Chantilly, Va.) to assume a 13-8 advantage. Giommarini closed out the match with a kill a short time later
  • VCU raced out to a commanding 2-0 lead in the match, but La Salle would not go away quietly. The Explorers quieted the Rams' offense with a combined 32 digs in the third and fourth sets on the way to 25-23 and 25-16 wins, respectively
  • VCU outblocked La Salle 17-8

NOTABLE

  • VCU improved to 10-0 all-time against La Salle
  • The Rams are 31-2 against A-10 competition since the start of the 2017 season
  • Giommarini inched closer to 1,000 kills. She needs five more to become the seventh player in school history to reach that milestone
