The short story: VCU junior Paula Neciporuka (Kuldiga, Latvia) recorded three of her 11 kills in the fifth set and the Rams received clutch kills down the stretch from seniors Jasmin Sneed (San Antonio, Texas) and Gina Tuzzolo (Virginia Beach, Va.) to secure a thrilling win over Alabama Friday in the VCU Invitational

OPENING VOLLEY

  • Senior Vicky Giommarini produced a team-high 13 kills and 16.5 points in the match for VCU
  • Sneed hit .312 in the contest and finished with seven kills and six blocks. She produced a pair of critical kills in the fifth-set tiebreaker
  • Tuzzolo added 12 kills and a pair of blocks for the Black and Gold
  • Setters Dajah Ard (Arlington, Texas) and Dani Jo David (Virginia Beach, Va.) combined for 46 assists to keep the VCU offense humming. The Rams hit .223 in the match, including .412 in the fifth. Ard supplied 27 assists and 10 digs
  • Alabama's Alyiah Wells led all players with 16 kills

THE DIFFERENCE

  • VCU stormed to an 11-5 lead in the fifth set as Neciporuka sparked an 8-2 run with three kills. Alabama trimmed the VCU lead to 12-11, but Sneed answered with a momentum-shifting kill. Moments later, Tuzzolo spiked a set from Ard at the left pin to secure a 15-12 victory
  • The Rams took advantage of six Crimson Tide service errors in the third set on the way to a 25-18 win and a 2-1 edge in the match
  • VCU hit .223 in the match. The Rams owned advantages in digs (59-54) and blocks (11-10). Alabama also committed 16 service errors in the match
