The short story: Senior outside hitter Vicky Giommarini (Rome, Italy) blasted 10 kills, but it wasn't enough for VCU, which fell Texas Tech in season-opening action in Columbus, Ohio.

OPENING VOLLEY

  • Newcomer Jaelyn Jackson (South Chesterfield, Va.), a graduate transfer from Baylor, provided six blocks to the VCU cause
  • Giommarini, a Second Team All-Atlantic 10 selection last season, hit .212 and supplied eight digs
  • The Rams also received six kills apiece from seniors Jasmin Sneed (San Antonio, Texas) and Gina Tuzzolo (Newport News, Va.)
  • On the back row, senior Madalon Simpson (Louisville, Ky.) added 12 digs for the Black and Gold
  • Emily Hill led the Red Raiders with a match-high 20 kills. She hit .390 in the match for Texas Tech

  • Texas Tech hit .280 overall, while VCU hit .139
  • Back line play helped carry the day for Texas Tech. The Red Raider outdug VCU 49-38. Tech also served up six aces
