Men's and Women's Track & Field Selected to Finish Seventh in A-10 Preseason Poll

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Both the VCU Men's and Women's Track & Field program were selected to finish seventh in the Atlantic 10 Coaches Poll that was released Thursday. The poll is voted on by the league's coaches.

Rhode Island, who has won eight consecutive A-10 Indoor Track & Field titles, was selected to repeat as the men's indoor champion. VCU, competing in its first season in the A-10, finished fifth in last season's Colonial Athletic Association Track & Field Championships.

"We have added quite a few pieces on the men's side and we should be able to score points in a number of events," said VCU Track & Field Head Coach Jon Riley. "I also want the seventh place preseason ranking to motivate our guys to work harder. Our goal has always been to win the championship and we have a long way to go to be number one."

On the women's side, six time conference champion and reigning champ Charlotte was selected to repeat as well. VCU, coming off one of its best seasons in school history, finished second in last season's CAA Track & Field Championship.

"On paper, we have one of the best assembled teams since I have been head coach at VCU," said Riley. "That is a testament to all the hard work my coaches have put into recruiting and getting our athletes ready. With a second place finish in last year's CAA Outdoor Championships, it has only made our athletes hungrier for a championship. We are ranked seventh in the A-10 so that means we have to work a little harder this year if we want to win the title. All I can say is watch out because we will shock some people."

The Rams open the indoor slate with a meet at Christopher Newport on December 8.  The 2013 Atlantic 10 Indoor Track & Field Championships will be held at the University of Rhode Island Feb. 16-17.
