ORLANDO, Fla. – VCU Women's Tennis sophomore No. 77 Paola Exposito Diaz-Delgado advanced to the Round of 16 of the NCAA Singles Tournament after defeating No. 57 Stacey Fung of Washington in straight sets. She is set to face off against the No. 1 seed Estela Perez-Somarriba of Miami tomorrow.
After winning the first set, Diaz-Delgado went down 1-4 in the second but rallied back to win the match. This marks only the fourth time in program history that a Ram has advanced to the Round of 16 in the NCAA Singles Tournament.
With wins over Melissa Lord and Fung, Diaz-Delgado has kept her historical season going. Her successes began in the fall season when she earned the singles crown at the ITA Atlantic Regional Championships, which secured her an automatic bid into the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships.
Throughout the spring season, Diaz-Delgado recorded the second most singles match wins (38) in VCU Women's Tennis history en route to tabbing Atlantic 10 Performer of the Year. She has now defeated three ranked opponents throughout the course of the season.
