RICHMOND, Va. – VCU Women's Tennis has earned the No. 1 seed in the Atlantic 10 Tournament for the seventh consecutive year, the league announced Tuesday morning. VCU enters the tournament as the defending A-10 Champion and looks to repeat last year's finish.
The Rams finished the season with a 15-5 overall record and a 4-0 record against A-10 opponents, marking the third consecutive year the program has had 15 or more wins. Three different Rams earned Atlantic 10 Player of the Week honors with sophomore Paola Exposito Diaz-Delgado being given the distinction three times, senior Anna Rasmussen twice and sophomore Marina Alcaide Bakkari once.
Five Rams won 10 or more single matches this season with Diaz-Delgado leading the way with an impressive 16-1 dual singles record. In addition, Diaz-Delgado earned the singles crown at the ITA Atlantic Regional Championship during the fall season and competed in the Oracle ITA National Fall Championship, held in Surprise, Ariz.
Sophomore Kanako Yano finished second on the team with a 13-6 dual singles record in matches during the spring season. Yano was crowned the Bedford Cup Mid-Atlantic Singles Champion in the first fall tournament of the 2018-19 season.
Junior Noumea Witmus finished the season with a 12-5 dual singles record followed by Rasmussen with a 11-6 record and Alcaide with a 11-3 record.
The Atlantic 10 Tournament will be held at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla. VCU will face the winner of No. 8 seed Rhode Island and No. 9 seed Saint Louis on Thursday, April 25 at 3 p.m.
