COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Sophomore Kanako Yano won the Bedford Mid-Atlantic singles title to highlight a successful weekend for VCU Women's Tennis at the Bedford Cup, hosted by Maryland at The Tennis Center at College Park.

The No. 6 seed Yano, cruised through the singles tournament, winning every match in two sets. In the championship match, she faced off against Sofie Moenster of Georgetown where she earned the title by winning 6-2 in the first set and won the second 7-6 after winning the tiebreaker 7-3.

Sophomore Melissa Ifidzhen made it all the way to the singles semifinals before she came up short to runner-up Moenster. Sophomore Marina Alcaide earned two wins before losing in the fourth round of the main draw but came out victorious in the Consolation group D against Melis Bayraktaroglu of George Washington.

In addition, sophomore Noumea Witmus and junior Sofia Sualahe each earned a win before their main draw title chances dropped short in the third round.

This tournament kicked off the beginning of the fall season for VCU, which returns to play on Sept. 20 when it travels to Milwaukee, Wis. for the Milwaukee Tennis Classic.
