RICHMOND, Va. – VCU women's tennis picked up a pair of weekly awards from the Atlantic 10, the conference announced on Wednesday afternoon. Sophomore Noumea Witmus earned Co-Player of the Week honors, while freshman Marina Alcaide Bakkari was named Rookie of the Week.
This is the first weekly honor of each player's career.
Witmus lead VCU to a dominant 4-0 win over James Madison on April 10 with wins in both singles and doubles. She started the day by pairing with freshman Paola Exposito Diaz Delgado to defeat Elizabeth Norman and Abby Amos 6-3 at No. 1 doubles. The Dutch sophomore then clinched the match for the Rams with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Emma Petersen at No. 4 singles.
Davidson's Ava Todd shared Co-Player of the Week honors with Witmus.
Alcaide Bakkari also played a crucial role in the win over the Dukes. She teamed up with junior Anna Rasmussen for the first time to defeat Jona Roka and Dylan Owens at No. 3 doubles by a score of 6-4. In singles play, she topped Roka at No. 3 singles 6-1, 6-4.
The Rams are 13-5 on the year, and close out the regular season with a match against Richmond today at 2:30 p.m. at Thalhimer Tennis Center.
