RICHMOND, Va. – After an undefeated week, VCU women's tennis picked up two weekly honors from the Atlantic 10. Junior Anna Rasmussen shared Co-Player of the Week honors and freshman Melissa Ifidzhen earned Rookie of the Week accolades.
Rasmussen turned in an undefeated week to help VCU defeat Morgan State and Elon. In singles play, she defeated Morgan State's Danielle Thompson 6-2, 7-5 on Wednesday before dispatching Elon's Olivia Lucas 6-2, 7-6 on Sunday, both at No. 1 singles. Rasmussen leads the Rams with a 10-2 record. She shared the Co-Player of the Week honors with Janja Kovacevic of Massachusetts.
In singles play, Ifidzhen defeated Morgan State's Alexus Gill 6-1, 6-2 on Wednesday and topped Elon's Alex Koniaev 7-6, 6-1 on Sunday, both at No. 4 singles.
The duo also teamed up for an undefeated week at No. 1 doubles, defeating the Bears' Thompson and Asmara Faluke 6-0 and topping the Phoenix's Maria Paraja and Suzanne Zenoni 6-2. Ifidzhen and Rasmussen lead the Rams with 10 doubles victories this season, while Ifidzhen alone has won 15 doubles matches.
This is the second Player of the Week honor this season for Rasmussen, and the first weekly award of Ifidzhen's career. The Rams return to action tomorrow, Feb. 22, when they host Howard at Thalhimer Tennis Center at 3 p.m.
