FRESHMEN LEAD STRONG START AT BEDFORD CUP

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - VCU women's tennis opened up the 2017 fall slate with strong performances at the Bedford Cup over the weekend.

Freshmen Marina Alcaide Bakkari and Sofia Sualehe won four consecutive doubles matches on the way to the finals of the 32-team bracket. Sophomore Noumea Witmus, who played doubles with James Madison's Dylan Owens, went 2-1 and made it to the semifinals before falling to Alcaide/Sualehe, 7-6 (5).

Freshman Melissa Ifidzhen led the way in singles play, going 3-1 on the weekend and making it to the semifinals on the 64-player tournament. Ifidzhen dropped just four games in her first two matches, defeating Virginia Tech's Fallon Delp 6-1, 6-0, and Owens 6-2, 6-1. Alcaide and freshman Paola Exposito Diaz Delgado both compiled 2-1 records, advancing to the quarterfinals. Alcaide fell to Ifidzhen in the quarterfinals in a tightly contested match, 4-6, 7-5, 12-10.

While Ifidzhen and Delgado lost their first round doubles match, they would win the Consolation bracket, defeating Virginia Tech's Fallon Delp and McKenzie Collins 6-2.
