HUNTINGTON, W. Va. – With less than three weeks left before the CAA Championships, the Virginia Commonwealth University women's tennis team is trying to gain momentum heading into their title defense.

That momentum seems to be building as the Rams reeled off their fourth straight victory after battling to a 4-3 win on the road against a tough Marshall squad.

"We're still adjusting to playing the outdoor game, so we're not playing our best tennis, but yet we're still getting wins," Associate Head Coach Yana Carollo said. "As a coach, wins are the most important part. We'll just continue to hit the practice courts hard and try to improve every day knowing that conference championships are right around the corner."

It was a tight match from the start when the Thundering Herd swept through the doubles competition, something that hadn't been done against the Black & Gold in over two years.

After Marshall picked up the first singles point of the day, the freshmen duo of Olga Terteac and Daria Yakavleva evened up the match with straight set victories of their own.

Junior Alex Bara continued her stellar spring with a hard-fought 6-7, 6-3, 6-2 win over Dominika Zaprazna at the second singles spot. However, Marshall tied the match back up with a victory at the top singles spot.

It came down to #4 singles, where junior Ana Bara fought her way to a 7-5, 2-6, 7-6 win to seal the match in the Rams' favor.

"I'm proud of the way Ana battled through a tough match to secure the win for us," Carollo said.

VCU returns to action on Wednesday when they host CAA rival, Old Dominion, in a 3 p.m. showdown at Thalhimer Tennis Center.
