RICHMOND, Va. – In college athletics, junior seasons are often used for breakout performances. Athletes have spent the previous two years getting adjusted to the collegiate level and are ready to show their true potential.

That may be why Alex Bara's spring season isn't all that surprising.

The Oradea, Romania native moved to a perfect 10-0 this spring with two straight set wins this past week and earned CAA Co-Player of the Week accolades for her outstanding play.

However, the honors didn't stop there as she also teamed with senior Kateryna Yergina to claim the CAA Doubles Team of the Week honor, posting two victories at the top doubles position.

"Our girls are really playing well right now. Alex and Kateryna have a lot to do with that," Head Coach Paul Kostin said. "Both of them are bringing the right amount of focus every time they step on the court and that's what we hope continues for the rest of the spring."

Bara's week started with a 6-2, 6-3 defeat of Penn State's Denisa Zobeideh and wrapped up with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Princeton's Monica Chow.

The junior is now 10-0 this spring and 15-3 overall on the year. She has victories at each of the top four spots in VCU's lineup.

On the doubles side, Bara and Yergina helped the Black & Gold claim both doubles points in their victories last week over Penn State and Princeton.

They toppled Penn State's Petra Januskova and Fernanda Perrotta, 8-6, as well as Princeton's Hilary Bartlett and Taylor Marable, 8-3.

VCU returns to action this Saturday when they host in-state rival Virginia Tech in an 11 a.m. showdown at Thalhimer Tennis Center.
