RICHMOND, Va. – The big white bubble located on Cary Street in Richmond may be an object of curiosity for most of the city's residents, but for the Virginia Commonwealth University women's tennis team, its home sweet home.

VCU showed once again why they love the Thalhimer Tennis Center so much with their 18th straight home victory, this time in the form of a 6-1 win over the Eagles of Winthrop University on Sunday afternoon.

The win moves the Black & Gold to 8-1 on the year and has them eyeing a spot in the top-25 after ranking 29th in last week's ITA poll.

Senior Kateryna Yergina led the way with a perfect 2-0 day, including an easy 8-3 win with doubles partner Alex Bara that helped VCU grab the doubles point to take an early lead on Winthrop. Yergina followed that up with a 6-1, 6-3 straight set win over Sandra Herrera at the second singles position.

The freshmen duo of Daria Yakavleva and Olga Terteac followed their senior leader with victories at the fourth and fifth positions to set up sophomore Josefin Hjertquist.

Hjertquist didn't disappoint with a 7-6 (2), 0-6, 6-3 hard-fought victory over Yasmine Alkema at the top singles spot.

VCU returns to action next Saturday when UT-Arlington comes to Richmond for a 10 a.m. showdown with the Black & Gold.
