RICHMOND, Va. – VCU Women's Lacrosse head coach Jen O'Brien has announced the Rams' 2018 schedule which features six home games, six total opponents from the state of Virginia and a road game against an Atlantic Coast Conference opponent in Virginia Tech.
VCU will enter its third season of play after improving from a 3-14 mark in year one to a 7-10 mark last season as the Rams tied for sixth in the A-10 standings. The Rams will build on that momentum as they return All-Atlantic 10 First Team selection Sky Hyatt and All-Rookie Team selection Keriann McTavish. Hyatt led the team with 44 goals scored and a team-high 63 points while McTavish scored 34 goals and added a team-high 26 assists. VCU returns its entire roster from the 2017 season and have also added six freshmen.
"We are extremely excited to release our 2018 schedule. We have added several challenging non-conference opponents which will no doubt prepare our team for the always competitive A-10 Conference schedule. For our program to grow and achieve the high goals we have set, it is important that we continue to challenge ourselves with tougher opponents each season," O'Brien said.
The Rams begin their season in Norfolk against Old Dominion (Feb.14), the first of four road games VCU will play to start the season. After facing the Monarchs, the Rams will face UMBC (Feb. 24), Longwood (Feb. 28) and Lehigh (March 6) all on the road.
VCU will play its first home game against Army (March 11) before traveling down I-64 to face William & Mary (March 14) and then returning to Cary Street Field to play LIU (March 18). The Rams will close out their non-conference schedule in a game at ACC member Virginia Tech (March 21).
"In the non-conference, we are excited to add an ACC opponent in Virginia Tech to our schedule, a team that beat 2017 NCAA Lacrosse Championship runner-up Boston College in the regular season last year. We are happy to be also be playing four in-state teams in non-conference. In addition to Virginia Tech, we will be playing ODU again this season and have added William & Mary as well as Longwood," O'Brien said.
The Rams open A-10 play at rival Richmond (March 29) and host Saint Joseph's (March 31) before hitting the road to face Duquesne (April 6) and St. Bonaventure (April 8). George Washington (April 13) will head to Richmond to face the Rams who hit the road to then face Davidson (April 15).
VCU closes the regular season with two of its final three games at home in facing La Salle (April 20) and UMass (April 22) at Cary Street Field before traveling to George Mason. The A-10 Championship will be held at the University of Richmond May 3-6.
