NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – For the first time in school history, VCU Women's Basketball is the No. 1 seed entering the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship.
VCU received a bye to the A-10 Quarterfinals and will face the winner of No. 8 Saint Joseph's and No. 9 George Washington at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 8. Those two teams will play on March 5 at 3 p.m. at Saint Joseph's. The A-10 Championships will be held in Pittsburgh, Pa. at the A.J. Palumbo Center on the campus of Duquesne University.
The Rams were A-10 Regular Season Co-Champions, sharing the honor with Fordham. VCU beat Fordham, 47-44, in their only meeting this season to win the tiebreaker. Beating Davidson in the regular season finale earned VCU its first regular season conference championship in program history. VCU's second place finish during the 2008-09 season was previously the best mark.
The Rams beat Saint Joseph's twice this season, the first a 59-40 win in Richmond and the second a 65-47 win in Philadelphia. VCU lost its only meeting with George Washington, a 57-48 setback on the road.
VCU finished the regular season with an overall record of 21-8 and a 13-3 mark in A-10 play. The Rams posted a remarkable turnaround after going 7-22 last season with the youngest team in the A-10.
The Rams' quarterfinal game will be broadcast on ESPN+. The A-10 Semifinals will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network and the A-10 Championship game will be on ESPNU.
