RICHMOND – VCU Men’s Soccer standout Siad Haji has been announced as one of 21 players named to the United States U-20 National Team in preparation for the 2019 U-20 Men’s World Cup being held in Poland. The roster was announced by the organization and USMNT U-20 Head Coach Tab Ramos Wednesday afternoon.
Haji joins an exclusive group of players, as he stands as only one of three collegiate players in the roster of 21. He is the first VCU player to be named to the roster since Steven Shirley in 2003. The New Hampshire native is also making his debut in the U-20 Player Pool, and is one of seven players named to the roster to have previously received a Best XI conference selection when he earned one as a member of the East U-17/U-18 Team in 2016.
“I’m excited for Siad, he’s been in and around the age group before,” said VCU Head Coach David Giffard. “He’s really had a solid eight months on the field and has taken a big step. It’s great that he will get a chance to show Tab and his staff the progress he’s made this year.”
The team’s first order of business will be training camp before heading to two matches versus Honduras, followed by another two matches versus Los Catrachos on May 17 and 19. It will be the first time the U-20’s have faced Honduras since the 2017 Concacaf U-20 Championship final.
The U-20 MNT is midway through the first year of a two-year cycle with the focus on qualifying for the 2019 U-20 Men’s World Cup in Poland. The two matches in Honduras add to the USA’s preparation schedule that has already included two matches against the France U-21s and a friendly vs. Atletico Madrid’s U-21s.
