VCU’S CASTILLO HEADS TO MLS COMBINE

RICHMOND, Va. – Dennis Castillo (San Jose, Costa Rica), the 2015 Atlantic 10 Defender of the Year, aims to launch his professional career with a strong showing at the 2016 MLS Player Combine Jan. 7-12 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Castillo, who earned three All-Region honors and four All-Atlantic 10 awards during his career, will participate in the Combine as part of Team X. In addition to training sessions, Castillo and Team X will play three games during the Combine.

Representatives from every MLS team will attend the Combine, which includes 60 of the nation's top seniors. He is the fourth Ram since 2013 to receive an invitation from the league.

The MLS will hold its annual SuperDraft on Jan. 14 in Baltimore, Maryland. Castillo hopes to become the third Ram drafted into the league in as many years. Jason Johnson was selected 13th overall by the Houston Dynamo in 2013, while Kharlton Belmar was a second-round pick of the Portland Timbers last season. Belmar played for the Portland Timbers 2 in 2015 and was named USL Rookie of the Year.

"We are all very excited for Dennis for his opportunity to play in front of all the MLS head coaches and GM's at the Combine," said VCU Coach Dave Giffard. "He's been a wonderful representative of VCU and VCU Soccer. We wish Dennis all the best as he begins the next step in his journey."

A member of Costa Rica's national team, Castillo scored 17 goals, including six game-winners, and racked up 36 points during his VCU career.
