Castillo tabbed PDL Defensive Player of the Year

PORTLAND, Ore. -- The honors continue to roll in for rising senior Dennis Castillo as he was named the PDL Defensive Player of the Year. Earlier this week, Castillo was also named to the PDL All-League and All-Western Conference teams.

The Costa Rica native made 11 appearances, including nine starts, for the Portland Timbers U-23 team, where he scored one goal and one assist in 893 minutes of action. The U-23 team finished the season second in the PDL's Northwest Division as they allowed only nine goals in 12 matches, which was tied for fourth overall among the league's 63 teams.

Castillo has been an instrumental part of VCU's backline since his arrival in 2012. This past season, he earned All Atlantic 10 Conference honors after the defense allowed the fewest goals in the programs 37-year history, and the 11th fewest in the country.

Castillo and the Rams open the 2015 season on Friday, August 28 when perennial power Akron visits Sports Backers Stadium.
