RICHMOND, Va. – VCU will host UNLV in the inaugural Mountain West – Atlantic 10 Challenge on Dec. 2, 2020 at the Stuart C. Siegel Center, the leagues revealed Thursday.
The game is part of a series of early December match-ups that will pit 10 teams from each league against each other as a showcase event for both conferences. Match-ups for each year are determined by the league offices based on several factors, including last year's record, NET rankings and anticipated strength for the upcoming season.
VCU and UNLV have never met. UNLV is led by first-year Head Coach T.J. Otzelberger, who is coming off a successful three-year run at South Dakota State. The Runnin' Rebels, 17-14 a year ago, reached the NCAA Tournament six times in seven seasons from 2007-13, including a Sweet 16 appearance in 2007. The program is best known for its 1990 National Championship victory over Duke. UNLV has reached the Final Four on four occasions (1977, 1987, 1990, 1991) and has reached the NCAA Tournament 20 times since 1975.
"We are looking forward to this partnership with the Mountain West Conference. Intentionally stretching our scheduling footprint into four time zones is great for television exposure and brand expansion," said Atlantic 10 Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade. "Non-conference games are important and these match-ups will be highly competitive, exciting and fun for our fan base."
Announced in December of 2018, the Mountain West/Atlantic 10 Challenge Series, is a scheduling partnership that covers the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons, with an option to extend the partnership for an additional two years, into the 2023-24 season.
