The short story: Junior Alston Newsom turned in the best finish of his collegiate career as new-look VCU placed fifth at the season-opening Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational Tuesday.


  • Newsom, a junior from Chesapeake, Va. shot 4-under, including a 67 Tuesday, at the 36-hole event to earn a share of ninth place. It's Newsom's first career top 10 finish. His previous career-best finish was 21st
  • The Rams combined to shoot 5-under (277-286=563) at the rain-shortened event. Wichita State (-19) coasted to a six-stroke win over Eastern Kentucky (-13). Dayton and Davidson (-8) tied for third
  • VCU's lineup featured freshmen Adrian Vagberg, Cam Barackman and Ian Peng. Freshman Clifford Foster also competed as an individual
  • Vagberg fired an opening-round 67 on Monday and tied for 21st in his collegiate debut
  • Sophomore Sachin Kumar and Barackman (+1) tied for 40th for VCU


  • Overall, VCU's six competitors at Marshall were four freshmen, one sophomore and a junior
  • Newsom carded just one bogey in Tuesday's final round and recorded five birdies, including three of his final five holes
  • VCU combined for 31 birdies in the tournament, fifth-most in the field. Newsom accounted for 10 of those
  • Peng carded 29 pars in 36 holes, the second-highest total in the field

The Rams are scheduled return home to host the annual VCU Invitational Sept. 17-18 at the Country Club of Virginia's Tuckahoe Creek Course. VCU will closely monitor the weather in the coming days and make schedule changes if necessary.
