NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The VCU field hockey team was picked to finish second in the 2019 Atlantic 10 Preseason Poll while Litiana Field, Maite Sturm and Svea Sturm were named to the Preseason All-Atlantic 10 team, the conference announced Monday.

The Rams finished second with 61 total points in the poll, which is voted on by the head coaches of each program in the A-10. Saint Joseph's, the defending A-10 Champions, were picked to repeat and garnered 71 total points and eight first-place votes.

Field was recognized on the Second Team All-Conference and the All-Rookie Team in 2018 after starting all 19 games as a true freshman. The defender from Sydney, Australia recorded five goals and finished second on the Rams squad with nine assists while tying for third on the team with 19 total points. She was also named to the Synapse All-American Rookie Team for her excellent debut performance.

Maite Sturm earned a place on the All-Atlantic 10 First Team and the NFHCA All-South Region Second Team a season ago. Starting all 19 games in the VCU midfield, the Waltrop, Germany native scored seven goals and led the team with 11 assists. She was also named to the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) All-State Second Team and was a member of the NFHCA All-Academic Squad.

Svea Sturm is also coming off a 2018 season in which she was a First Team All-Atlantic 10 selection. Svea scored two goals and tallied three assists. She was also named a Division I Scholar of Distinction as well as to the NFCHA National Academic Squad.

The trio led the Rams to a 12-7 record overall, including a 7-1 record in conference play, last season. VCU averaged 2.9 goals per game while allowing just 1.44 goals against en route to a spot in the A-10 Tournament championship game. Following that success, the 2019 season marks the second straight year in which three players have earned preseason accolades.

VCU beings the 2019 regular season on Friday, Aug. 30 at Lafayette. The Rams then return to Richmond for their home opener on Friday, Sept. 6 against LIU. All home games are played at Cary Street Field and admission is free to the public.
