ALBANY, N.Y. – Sophomores Kelsey Scherrer (Chesapeake, Va.) and Chelsea Hill (Virginia Beach, Va.) each scored for Virginia Commonwealth University, but Albany picked up a 3-2 overtime win over the Rams Saturday at Alumni Field in the season opener for both schools.

Albany's Christina Patrick collected a rebound in the seventh minute of overtime and fired a shot into the lower right corner of the cage for the winning score.
VCU, which was 8-9 a year ago, weathered a 21-shot attack from the Great Danes, and got six saves from keeper Erin Jablonski (Charlottesville, Va.).
"Overall, I'm pleased with how some of our young kids," said VCU Coach Kelly McQuade. "They're doing some great things. Our senor leadership was good today. Our upperclassmen are paving the way to set us up for a great season."
Scherrer tied the game at 1-1 in the 28th minute when she and freshman Emilie Soares (Santa Clara, Calif.) combined on a two-on-one opportunity. Albany retaliated with an Alysia Hough score in the 45th minute to regain the lead.
However, the Rams clawed back to even on an outstanding individual effort from Hill to beat the Albany keeper in the 60th minute.
VCU returns to the field on Sunday, Aug. 29 when they meet Boston University at 2:30 p.m. at Alumni Field in Albany.
