RICHMOND, Va. – On the heels of a breakout 2018 campaign, VCU senior closer Mac McCarty (Port Orchard, Wash.) was named to Collegiate Baseball's Preseason All-America Second Team Monday.

A submarining right-hander, McCarty recorded 16 saves, second-most in school single-season history, and crafted a 3.26 ERA in 30 appearances for the Rams last spring. He struck out 36 and walked just 13 in 38 2/3 innings of work.

McCarty, a junior college transfer from Pierre Community College, was named ABCA/Rawlings All-East Region First Team for his efforts last season. McCarty enters the 2019 season sixth on VCU's all-time saves list. Sam Donko, who saved 34 games for the Rams from 2016-17, holds the school career mark.

Led by seventh-year Head Coach Shawn Stiffler. McCarty and VCU, 34-23 last season, will open up the 2019 campaign on Feb. 15 at Coastal Carolina.
