The Short Story: The VCU Rams made program history on Friday afternoon, as the Black & Gold used a monster day from Darian Carpenter to propel them to a 14-2 win over the Richmond Spiders. With the win, the Rams clinched their first Atlantic 10 regular season championship since joining the conference, and the first regular season championship for the program since 2003 as a member of the CAA.

  • Carpenter opened the flood gates with a 4-for-4 day with two home runs, a triple, a walk, five RBI and five runs scored. He put up 12 total bases, and recorded his third four-hit game of the season. With his pair of home runs, he tied Brandon Inge for the second-most home runs in a single season by a Ram with 15 this year.
  • Zac Ching also had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a home run, three RBI, and a run scored. It would be his fifth three-hit game of the season.
  • Logan Farrar and Daane Berezo each had a two-hit game, as Farrar went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI, while Berezo chiiped in with a pair of RBI as well. Farrar currently leads the team in multi-hit games this season with 25.
  • Brett Willett added two RBI day as he went 1-for-3 with a walk. He led the list of six others who collected a hit on the afternoon, as everyone in the starting lineup grabbed at least one.
  • Senior Brooks Vial snagged his eighth win of the season on the mound behind six innings of work, giving up two runs and scattering nine hits.

  • It would be Richmond jumping on the board first in the bottom of the first inning, as two straight singles and a wild pitch would set up a Daniel Brumbaugh sacrifice fly to give the Spiders an early 1-0 lead.
  • VCU would strike back in the top of the second inning, as Darian Carpenter led off the inning with a triple off the wall in right field. Brett Willett would follow with a single through the right side, scoring Carpenter and tying the game at 1-1.
  • In the top of the third inning, the Rams would break open on offense as they capitalized on Richmond walks. Both Darian Carpenter and Willett drew bases loaded walks to force home runs, breaking the tie and making it a 3-1 game.
  • Now with two out in the top of the third, Daane Berezo bopped a single into right field, scoring a pair of runs and pushed the VCU lead to 5-1.
  • Farrar would get in on the action before the top of the third ended, smacking a double to the right field gap and scoring another pair of runs. VCU would end the inning with six runs and a 7-1 lead.
  • Darian Carpenter added some muscle to the lineup in the top of the fourth, as he sent a two-run home run over the left field fence for his 14th home run of the season. That gave the Rams a 9-1 lead.
  • The Spiders came back with a run in the bottom of the fourth, as R.J. Watters singled to right field with a couple runners on, scoring one of those to put the score at 9-2. Vial would grab a strikeout to end the inning and send the game to the fifth with that score.
  • Zac Ching added a three-run home run to the tally in the top of the sixth, as he went deep to left for his third home run of the year. That would give VCU a 12-2 lead.
  • An hour weather delay didn't cool down Darian Carpenter's bat as the game resumed play, as he hit his second home run of the day for a two-run blast in the top of the eighth inning. That would move the score to 14-2 in favor of the Black & Gold.
  • Jonathan Ebersole and Tanner Winters combined for the final three scoreless innings of work to clinch the win for VCU.

VCU will return to action this tomorrow, May 20 for Game 3 of the three-game series on the road against the Richmond Spiders. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Pitt Field.
