Dwyer signs free agent deal with Chicago Cubs

RICHMOND, Va. – The Windy City added a little more Black & Gold last night as Heath Dwyer of the VCU Baseball program inked a free agent deal with the Chicago Cubs. He becomes the fourth Ram in the past five days to join the professional ranks.

Dwyer is the second VCU player to join the Cubs after fellow senior Vimael Machin was selected in the 10th round by Chicago. Daniel Concepcion (Kansas City Royals) and Matt Lees (Arizona Diamondbacks) also joined the professional ranks this past week.

"I'm excited for this tremendous opportunity for Heath. He's been a workhorse for our program over the past four years and it's great to see him get an opportunity to continue his career at the professional level," Head Coach Shawn Stiffler said.

The Chandler, Arizona native led the country in starts made with 18 and led the Atlantic 10 with 10 victories on the year. He finished with a 10-2 record and 3.01 ERA en route to all-conference and all-region accolades. He racked up 89 strikeouts in 95.2 innings of work.

He leaves VCU ranked second all-time in total wins with 27 during his four seasons.
