BALTIMORE, Md. – Virginia Commonwealth University rising sophomore Nick Kime (Stafford, Va./Mountain View) has earned the respect of his peers this summer playing for the Herndon Braves in the Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League.
The infielder was rewarded for a productive first half with a spot on the league's all-star squad and will participate in the annual Mid-Atlantic Classic tonight in Bethesda, Md. The inter-league matchup, which pits the top CRCBL players against the Valley Baseball League All-Stars, is set to begin at 7:30 p.m., at Shirley Povich Field.
Kime enters the all-star break second in the league hitting .360, while collecting four doubles, one triple and a team-high tying two home runs. The Stafford, Va., native has scored 16 runs with 11 RBI, and is 6-for-7 in stolen bases.
Each roster, which is selected by a committee of coaches, owners and league officials, will feature 12 pitchers and 16 position players. Three other Colonial Athletic Association schools are represented on the CRCBL squad with George Mason left-handed pitcher Chris O'Grady and infielder Nick Allen, Towson infielder Austin Harclerode and James Madison outfielder Johnny Bladel.
It is the second straight year VCU has seen a player compete in the Mid-Atlantic Classic as former second baseman Richard Gonzalez (Caguas, Puerto Rico/PRBA) was a member of the Valley Baseball League squad last season.
