FORTUNE, MORRIS, JOHNSON POST VICTORIES
Rams’ women’s track and field team places third at Colonial Invitational

NEWARK, Del. – The Virginia Commonwealth University women’s track and field team posted a third-place finish over the weekend at the Colonial Invitational, hosted by the University of Delaware.

The Rams had 150 points in the 18 events that were scored, finishing behind only Towson (177 points) and Delaware (167)

Sophomore Quina Fortune (New Orleans, La.), freshman Allison Morris (Langhorne, Pa.) and senior Verniece Johnson (Mineral, Va.) were event winners for the Rams.

Johnson won twice, taking first in the long jump at 5.83 meters and first in the triple jump at 11.42 meters.   Fortune captured the 200-meters in 25.01 seconds.    Morris was the high jump champion with a leap of 1.60 meters.

Fortune was runner-up in the 60 meters with a time of 7.82 seconds.  Johnson added to her day by finishing third in the 200 (25.97 seconds), just ahead of freshman teammate Rachel Montague (Marlton, N.J.), who finished in 26.06 seconds.

Freshman Nicole Walters (Orange, Va.) finished second in the 800 meters.  She covered the distance in 2 minutes, 20.24 seconds.   Senior Natalie Duncan (Alexandria, Va.) was runner-up in the shot put with a toss of 12.74 meters.  Junior Sernarra Archie (Winston-Salem, N.C.) was third in the triple jump at 10.97 meters.

“We were excited to be competing in this meet and very happy with many of our performances,” said assistant coach Ethan Tussing.   “We were looking for our competitors to do their best in their primary events and a lot of them stepped up and accomplished that goal.

“Alli continues to show great consistency.  Quina continues to lead the sprints and Verniece is a dynamic jumping threat.  Natalie overcame illness to end up second and Nicole set a PR in the 800 to hold off the runner from Towson down the stretch.”
