CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Junior Whitney Key (Goochland, Va.) started to emerge as a pivotal part of the success of the Virginia Commonwealth University women’s track & field program during the spring of 2008.
One year later, Key looks to be doing the same as she picked up three victories to lead the Black & Gold at this past weekend’s UVA Spring Swashbuckle.
Key led the Rams to 16 top-five finishes on the day, including nine of which were top-three performances.
The junior’s day started with a victory in the 100-meter dash as she stopped the clock in 12.41. She also was a key part of victories in both the 4x100 meter relay (48.03) and 4x400 meter relay (3:55.29).
Freshman Teresa Trader (Purcellville, Va.) was the only other Ram to pick up a win as the youngster grabbed her first collegiate title with a time of 1:09.25 in the 400-meter hurdles.
Redshirt freshman Allison Morris (Langhorne, Pa.) continued to emerge as a possible point scorer for VCU with a second-place finish in the high jump.
Sophomore Stephanie Newing (Virginia Beach, Va.) joined Morris with a second-place performance in the pole vault.
Senior Natalie Duncan (Alexandria, Va.) posted two top-five performances on the weekend with a third-place finish in the shot put and fifth-place showing in the discus.
The Rams have a busy weekend planned next weekend with split squad performances at both the Towson Invitational and the Fred Hardy Invitational at VCU’s Sports Backers Stadium.
