CONWAY, S.C. – Spring break is a time that most college students relax and enjoy some time with their friends.

Seniors Verniece Johnson (Mineral, Va.) and Natalie Duncan (Alexandria, Va.) of the Virginia Commonwealth University women’s track & field showed just how to handle their break.

Both veterans returned from spring break and captured victories to lead the Rams to a strong showing at the Coastal Carolina Invitational this past weekend.

Johnson leaped 18’ 7” to garner the top spot in the long jump, while Duncan heaved 41’ 3” in the shot put to earn the victory.

Duncan also grabbed a top-three finish and a personal best in the discus with a mark of 133’ 3”. The mark was nearly 13 feet longer than her previous personal best.

”It was a tough day, conditions-wise,” Head Coach Jon Riley said. “Natalie and Verniece didn’t throw or jump nearly as far as they have in previous weeks, but they still came away with victories. Sometimes that’s the best you can do on a given day.”

Redshirt freshman Allison Morris (Langhorne, Pa.) continued her outstanding campaign with another top-five finish. This time, Morris’ mark of 4’ 11” in the high jump was good enough for fifth-place.

The freshman duo of Rachel Montague (Marlton, N.J.) and Nicole Walters (Orange, Va.) rounded out the top five finishes for the Black & Gold. Montague leaped to 37’ 2 ½” in the triple jump for third place and Walters crossed the line in 2:19.29 in the 800-meter, good for fourth-place.

“Spring break is over for our girls,” Riley said. “We’re going to hydrate and hit the track hard this week in practice. Vacation time is over.”

The Rams make the short trip west to Charlottesville, Va. to take part in the UVA Spring Swashbuckle on Saturday, March 21st.
