DULLEA’S HELPING HAND LEADS RAMS TO 2-0 WIN AT DREXEL
Box Score
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Sophomore Meaghan Dullea (Virginia Beach, Va.) is known for her ability to keep her composure no matter what the situation.
Friday night, Dullea and her Virginia Commonwealth University women’s soccer teammates were facing a pressure situation in a key Colonial Athletic Association against the Dragons of Drexel University.
Once again, the second-year standout kept her composure, tallying assists on both of the Rams’ goals in a 2-0 Black & Gold road victory.
“It’s always good to get back in the win column, especially on the road,” Co-Head Coach Tiffany Roberts Sahaydak said. “We are starting to get healthier and were able to use a little more depth tonight, which helps a lot. There are still things that we have to continue to try and improve, but we’re making strides and that’s a good thing.”
The first half was back and forth until the 34th minute when VCU’s offensive pressure finally resulted in a goal. Freshman Gabby Wilson (Woodbridge, Va.) unleashed a shot that got blocked and Dullea was there to gather it up on the right side of the box. A crisp pass through the scramble was tapped by senior Jasmine Riley (Arlington, Va.), who found sophomore Azania (Taboao Da Sarra, Brazil). Azania promptly blasted a shot into the back of the net to give the Rams a 1-0 advantage.
Dullea along with junior Myriam Bouchard (Quebec City, Quebec) would then lead a tight defensive effort that stifled any Dragon opportunity in the second half.
A set piece late in the second half helped put the icing on the cake when Dullea found senior June Hartman (Virginia Beach, Va.) on a free kick, who tallied her fourth goal of the year.
“Meaghan’s been the player we have gone to all year on set pieces and she did a great job on the play to cap off the night,” Roberts Sahaydak added. “She’s just a solid player that we know we can rely on day-in and day-out.”
Senior Kate Hudson (Clarksville, Md.) picked up her sixth shutout of the season, registering five saves on the evening.
VCU is back in action again on Sunday when it travels to Newark, Del. for a 1 p.m. showdown with the Fightin’ Blue Hens of the University of Delaware. |
