ALLEN EARNS SPOT ON CANADIAN WOMEN’S U-20 TEAM

RICHMOND, Va. – Representing your country is something every athlete dreams of when they are growing up.

Sophomore Molly Allen (Halifax, Nova Scotia) will get that rare opportunity as the current member of the Virginia Commonwealth University women’s soccer team was selected to Canada’s 2010 Women’s Under-20 team roster, led by head coach Carolina Morace.

After training at the University of South Florida, Allen and her U-20 teammates will travel to Guatemala for the 2010 CONCACAF Women’s Under-20 Championship. The 11-day tournament begins Jan. 20 in Ciudad, Guatemala with a 3pm contest between Canada, the current defending champion, and Costa Rica. Canada will also face off against Cuba and Guatemala.

The top teams competing in the CONCACAF Championship will advance to a semi-final round and have the opportunity to move on to this summer’s FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Germany.

Allen has spent the last two seasons as a crucial part of VCU’s backline. Over that span, the Rams defense has allowed one goal or less in 24 of their 38 matches (a .632 percentage) , including 11 shutouts.
