RAMS BEGIN BUSY WEEKEND AT HOME
VCU hosts Wofford on Friday before traveling to Navy
RICHMOND, Va.—For the first time in history, the Wofford College women’s soccer team will step on the pitch at SportsBackers Stadium. Virginia Commonwealth University hosts the Terriers in a 6:00 p.m. match-up Friday. It is the second meeting between the two school, and the first since 1999, when Shanna Ziegenfuss scored in overtime to give VCU a 2-1 win in Spartanburg, S.C. VCU enters this season’s meeting with a 2-4 mark. Wofford is 1-3-3.
VCU will face a slightly more familiar foe on Sunday, when the Rams take on Navy (4-2-1) in Annapolis, Md. The Rams and Midshipmen have squared off five times since 1995, with VCU holding a 3-2 advantage.
VCU and Navy also share familiarity on the sidelines. VCU co-head coach Tiffany Roberts Sahaydak and Navy head coach Carin Gabarra played six seasons together on the United States national team.
“She was actually my roommate on my first international trip,” Sahaydak said of Gabarra. “I was 16 and I think she had just gotten out of college, so there was a big age difference, but she was great. She taught me a lot about the international game. She even helped me with my homework. What’s funny is about a year or so earlier, my club team won a tournament and she was the one passing out the trophies. I respected her so much and considered her a role model, so I wanted my picture taken with her after the awards ceremony. I got this picture with her, and then a year later she’s my roommate in Portugal.”
The Rams are coming off a weekend in which they scored six goals en route to a pair of victories. Stephanie Power (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia) was named CAA Player of the week and earned a spot on the Soccer Buzz National Elite Team of the Week after notching three goals and two assists in the Rams' victories. |
