Box Score
ATLANTA, Ga.—The Virginia Commonwealth University women’s scored early and withstood a barrage of shots by Georgia State to claim a 1-0 victory over the Panthers on Friday. With the win, the Rams (6-4-1, 2-0-1) extended their unbeaten streak to seven matches. Georgia State falls to 8-4-0 and 1-2-0 in the CAA.
After the ball bounced around in front of the net, senior Samara Stephen-Dowd (Vienna, Va.) poked it in to give the Rams an early 1-0 advantage in the 28th minute. Despite numerous caroms, senior Megan Flanagan (Franktown, Colo.) was able to find Stephen-Dowd for the decisive goal. It was Flanagan’s fifth assist of the season and Stephen-Dowd’s first goal of the year.
Senior goalkeeper Kali Van Covern (Waynesboro, Va.) improved to 4-0-1 with her second consecutive shutout. She did so in the face of 16 shots by Georgia State. Van Covern recorded five saves to remain unbeaten. Kay Harbrueger was the biggest nuisance to the VCU defense, cranking out four shots. The Rams produced 10 shots, including eight in the first half. Georgia State goalkeeper Heidi Blankenship turned away four of the Rams’ five shots on goal.
VCU is 6-0-1 during its current seven-match unbeaten streak. It is the longest unbeaten streak for the Rams since early in the 2006 season. VCU went 6-0-1 during a similar stretch that started September 10, 2006 and ended with a 1-0 loss at William & Mary on October 8, 2006.
