GREENSBORO, N.C. – With its roster completely made up of underclassmen, the Virginia Commonwealth University women’s cross country team is carrying itself more like veterans.

The Rams continued to make progress as a group and finished third at this past weekend’s Hagan Stone Park Invitational, finishing just behind Duke and Liberty.

“We continue to improve and that’s the great thing about it.” Director of Cross Country and Assistant Track & Field Coach Ethan Tussing said. “We got so close to averaging under 20 minutes as a team and hopefully by next week, we’ll be there. I feel we’re in pretty good position leading up to the conference meet in a couple weeks.”

Sophomores Heather DelaCruz (Williamsburg, Va.) and Nicole Walters (Orange, Va.) each posted season bests with times of 19:27.00 and 19:48.4, respectively. Each finished among the top-20 collegiate finishers at the meet.

“It was good to see our two girls with the most experience step up and post solid times this week,” Tussing added.

Freshman Shannon Brady (Sterling, Va.) broke the tape just under 20 minutes to round out the top three, posting a time of 19:57.9 over the five-kilometer course.

Fellow freshman Hannah Leffew (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Sarah Earman (Nokesville, Va.) also posted solid times of 19:57.9 and 20:04.9 to round out VCU’s top five.

The Rams are back in action in two weeks when they travel to the Penn State National meet on Friday, October 16th.
