WILLIAMS EARNS ALL-CAA HONORS TO LEAD RAMS AT CAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
FARMINGDALE, N.Y.—On a young VCU team, it was a veteran leading the way at the CAA women’s cross country championships. Senior Danielle Williams (Virginia Beach, Va.) paced the Rams with a fifth place finish Friday, earning the senior All-Conference honors.
Williams covered the six-kilometer course in 22:09.7. Sophomore Melissa Douglas (Spotsylvania, Pa.) clocked in at 23:42.6 to finish 39th. Georgia State senior Rachel Hannah won the race, completing the course in a time of 21:28.4.
With the fifth-place finish, Williams earns All-CAA honors, marking the first time since 2004 that a Ram has gained that recognition when Elizeba Boit accomplished that feat. The top-five finish by Williams was the first by a Black and Gold member since 2000, when VCU legend Maria-Elena Calle finished second overall.
"I'm proud of our girls. We went out and competed hard today on a tough course," Assistant Coach Ethan Tussing said. "Danielle once again proved she can run with the likes of William and Mary and James Madison. We showed that we are taking steps in the direction of where we want to be."
As a team, VCU finished ninth with 221 points. William & Mary claimed its fifth straight CAA championship. The Tribe closed with a miniscule 40 points, 10 points ahead of second-place James Madison.
