RICHMOND, Va. – The future continues to brighten for the Virginia Commonwealth University women’s cross country team as the Rams battled through tough weather conditions to place fourth in a talent-laden field at the Virginia Tech Relays on Friday evening.

The relays consisted of a pair of runners who teamed up and ran two legs of 3,000-meters. The top three duos that crossed the line for each squad counted for team scoring.

VCU, which has only one senior on its squad, was led by the tandem of junior Melissa Douglass (Spotsylvania, Va.) and freshman Heather DelaCruz (Williamsburg, Va.) who placed eighth overall with a combined time of 48:48.00.

Senior Samantha Hendel (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) continues to shine in her final season posting the top 3,000-meter split time (12:00) on the squad and combined with freshman Nicole Walters (Orange, Va.) to grab a 10th-place finish.

The Washington sisters rounded out the scoring for the Black and Gold as Aubree (Woodbridge, Va.) and Genova (Woodbridge, Va.) garnered a 15th-place finish at the event.

VCU will take two weeks off as it prepares for the 25th Annual Hagan Stone Park Invitational on September 27th, an event hosted by UNC Greensboro.
