WALLER NAMED COLONIAL ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK
RICHMOND, Va. – Virginia Commonwealth University senior guard Kita Waller was named Colonial Athletic Association Co-Player of the Week today following her career performances in a pair of VCU wins last week.
Waller averaged 31.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.5 steals per game, while shooting .636 (21-of-33) from the field and .938 (15-of-16) from the free throw line in victories against UNC Wilmington and Georgia State.
The Gainesville, Ga., native tied a VCU single-game record with 35 points Thursday against UNC Wilmington, while registering five steals and dishing out four assists. She nearly matched that effort against Georgia State Sunday with a game-high 28 points on 8-of-12 shooting.
Entering last week, her previous career-high was 23 points, which she registered against American on Nov. 13, 2007. Waller had only reached the 20-point plateau once this season – in the Rams’ conference opener against Northeastern – prior to her offensive outburst last week.
Waller has started 11-straight games after recovering from a knee injury she suffered during preseason workouts. Since joining Head Coach Beth Cunningham’s starting five at Longwood on Dec. 28, 2009, Waller is averaging 16.8 points, 5.2 rebounds, 3.6 steals and 2.6 assists per game. She is shooting .500 from the field during the 11-game stretch.
