RAMS SEEK REVENGE AS SEAHAWKS COME TO THE SIEGEL CENTER
Black & Gold look to pick up 15th straight home victory
02-04-09
RICHMOND, Va. – Eleven days ago the Virginia Commonwealth University women’s basketball team walked into Trask Coliseum on the campus of UNC Wilmington in a tie for first-place in the Colonial Athletic Association standings.
The Rams left Trask that day disappointed after a tough 73-60 loss at the hands of the Seahawks.
Thursday night the Black & Gold will get its shot at revenge when UNC Wilmington comes to the Alltel Pavilion at the Stuart C. Siegel Center for a 7 p.m. match-up.
Senior Quanitra Hollingsworth (Chesapeake, Va.) (left) has a shot at history in the contest as the veteran is just seven rebounds away from becoming the first player in VCU women’s basketball history to eclipse the 1,000-point, 1,000-rebound plateau.
Hollingsworth and her teammates are coming off a crucial 58-51 home win over perennial CAA Old Dominion that locked the Rams in a three-way tie for first-place with James Madison and Drexel, all with 7-2 marks in conference play.
This year has been more about a balanced team attack rather than focusing on just Hollingsworth down low. Juniors D’Andra Moss (Atlanta, Ga.) and La’Tavia Rorie (Charlotte, N.C.) (left), along with senior Radoslava Bachvarova (Varna, Bulgaria), are all averaging double-digits in the Rams’ nine conference contests.
Rorie has been outstanding at home for the Black & Gold scoring 13.3 points, pulling down 5.0 rebounds and dishing out 3.2 assists per game in VCU’s 12 home games this season.
She has been the spark behind the current 14-game home winning streak dating back to February 21st of last year against Old Dominion. The Rams have held 11 of those 14 opponents under 60 points.
Defense will be the focus against the Seahawks as UNC Wilmington put up the second highest point total versus VCU this season. Treasure Johnson had a career-day off the bench with 16 points, while reigning CAA Rookie of the Year Brittany Blackwell had 15 points.
UNC Wilmington turned up the defense with a 2-3 zone that forced the Black & Gold into just 33.3% from the field and 28.0% from beyond the arc.
VCU holds an 18-15 lead in the all-time series and have won three of the last four meetings, dating back to the 2006-07 season. The two teams split last year’s regular-season series, with both teams winning on each other’s home floor.
