RAMS HIT THE ROAD IN SEARCH OF SIXTH STRAIGHT WIN
Black and Gold take on UNC Wilmington at 2 p.m
1-24-09 .

WILMINGTON, N.C. – By looking at the stat sheet, it is obvious to tell that junior La’Tavia Rorie (Charlotte, N.C.) is a key player for the Virginia Commonwealth University women’s basketball team.

In Rams’ 15 wins this season, Rorie is averaging 11.5 points per game and shooting 45.2% from the field. In the three losses, she is having a tough time with just 2.0 ppg and 11.1% from the field.

For that reason, the Black and Gold hope to see a repeat performance of the last time Rorie took the court at Trask Coliseum when VCU take on the Seahawks of UNC Wilmington in a 2 p.m. contest on Sunday afternoon.

The last time Rorie was at Trask she tallied a game-high 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting to lead the Black and Gold to a 73-52 victory on January 24th of last year.

Rorie, who is coming off a 17-point performance in the Rams’ 83-58 victory over Hofstra on Thursday night, will look to senior Quanitra Hollingsworth (Chesapeake, Va.) to be her partner in crime as Hollingsworth leads VCU with 14.4 points and 9.2 rebounds per game this season.

The Black and Gold are looking to extend its current win streak of five and pick up its 12th win in the past 13 games on Sunday. VCU sits at 15-3 on the year and 5-1 in the CAA, while UNC Wilmington is 8-9 and 2-4 in conference action.

Defense and a balanced scoring attack has been the key to the recent success for VCU as it has held four of its past five opponents under 50 points and has had at least three players in double-figures in all five contests.

The Seahawks snapped its four-game losing streak with a 59-53 victory over Delaware Thursday at Trask Coliseum.

The Seahawks enjoyed a 38-29 edge on the glass for its biggest rebounding margin of the season while going 19-of-26 from the charity stripe, marking the first time in four games that UNCW had posted more than 14 attempts from the charity stripe. The Seahawks also overcame a poor-shooting first half that saw them make just 10 of its 31 tries from the floor by going 9-for-18 from the field in the final stanza.

Candace Walker had one of her finest games in a Seahawk uniform against the Blue Hens, scoring a season-high 12 points while dishing out a career-high six assists and grabbing seven rebounds. Walker also recorded a team-best three steals in the contest.

VCU holds an 18-14 lead in the all-time series and have won three of the last four meetings, dating back to the 2006-07 season. The two teams split last year’s regular-season series, with both teams winning on each other’s home floor.

The Rams recorded a 73-52 victory at Trask Coliseum on Jan. 24, only to have the Seahawks return the favor with a 64-58 victory at the Siegel Center on Feb. 14.

UNCW has won nine of 14 meetings with VCU in Wilmington, but the Rams have won three straight at Trask. The Seahawks last home victory over the Rams came in a 65-59 triumph in the regular-season finale of the 2004-05 season.
