CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Virginia Commonwealth University women's basketball team hope that Sunday evening will be full of firsts in school history as it travels to Chapel Hill, N.C. to take on the No. 6/4 Tar Heels of North Carolina in the second round of the Preseason WNIT.
The contest marks the first-ever between the two schools that are seperated by less than three hours, and the Black and Gold will look to pick up the first-ever win over a Top-10 program.
Senior Radoslava Bachvarova (Varna, Bulgaria) was the big reason why VCU is in Chapel Hill thanks to her clutch free-throw shooing with 2.1 seconds remaining that gave the Rams a thrilling and hard-fought 59-57 over Liberty in the season opener.
Bachvarova and junior Kita Waller (Gainesville, Ga.) each poured in 13 points to lead the offensive output, while senior Quantira Hollingsworth (Chesapeake, Va.) chipped in 10 points and eight rebounds. In just her first collegiate game, freshman Jennifer Lane (Wichita, Kan.) was outstanding at the point dishing out five assists for the Black and Gold.
North Carolina blew past Western Carolina in the opening round of the tournament by a score of 90-56. Cetera DeGraffenreid and Italee Lucas each scored 14 points and Jessica Breland added 12 points for the Tar Heels, who opened with a 23-2 run and led 57-32 at halftime. They shot 50 percent.
The contest also marks the first game against an Atlantic Coast Conference school since the 1998-99 campaign, when the Rams battled Virginia and Wake Forest.
Tip-off for today's game is slated for 5 p.m. at the Smith Center in Chapel Hill.
