RAMS TRAVEL TO TOWSON FOR TELEVISED TANGLE WITH THE TIGERS
Black & Gold search for first win at Towson since 2003-2004
02-12-09
TOWSON, Md. – Off to the best start in school history, the Virginia Commonwealth University women’s basketball team heads to a place that has haunted them for the past five seasons, the Towson Center.
Entering with a 19-4 mark, VCU will look for its first win at Towson since Head Coach Beth Cunningham’s first season at the helm, 2003-2004. Over that span, the Tigers have won all three games in their home arena and have posted a 6-1 overall mark against the Rams.
It will mark the second straight televised contest for the Rams with the game being featured on Comcast Sportsnet.
Since starting the season 4-2, the Black & Gold have been dominant with wins in 15 of its past 17 contests.
The biggest reason for the success has been a scoring attack that couldn’t possibly be any more balanced with five players averaging over nine points a game over the past 17 games.
Senior Quanitra Hollingsworth (Chesapeake, Va.) has been the leader of that crew with 14 points and 8.9 rebounds per game, while classmate Radoslava Bachvarova (Varna, Bulgaria) and junior La’Tavia Rorie (Charlotte, N.C.) are adding 10.4 ppg.
The offense has been sparked by outstanding defensive play as the Rams have held the past 17 opponents to just 53.9 ppg compared to an offensive output of 70.9 ppg.
Towson’s success at home has continued this season as the Tigers are 7-2 at home, but have dropped three of their past five contests including a 56-53 home loss to Hofstra on Sunday afternoon.
All-CAA guard Shanae Baker-Brice leads Towson with 16.4 points, 4.2 assists and 4.1 rebounds per outing. Frontcourt star Katrina Wheeler is the only other Tiger in double-figures with 10.9 points and 9.5 rebounds per game but is a game-time decision due to a nagging leg injury.
Game time at the Towson Center is set for 7 p.m.
