RAPPIN’ ABOUT RECRUITING WITH THE WOMEN’S HOOPS ASSISTANTS

Racking up frequent flyer miles during the month of July is easy for college basketball coaches - it's the busiest time of year for recruiting with tournaments all across the country.

On the heels of a hectic month-long journey, VCUathletics.com recently sat down with the three assistants on VCU’s women’s basketball coaching staff to discuss their perspective on the recruiting trail in part two of "Rappin' about Recruiting."

RAPPIN' ABOUT RECRUITING

Best thing about July?
The opportunity to travel and see different parts of the country.
July 31st! No, honestly, it's when you get to see a talented athlete who is interested in VCU. It's truly fun to watch and evaluate how a player can help us.
Traveling to different states and cities.
Worst thing about July?
Lack of sleep
No time to eat well, sleep well or exercise at all.
You do not get to see much of the state or city you're visiting because you are in the gym all day and night.
What are the "X" factors that you look for? Work ethic and attitude, and kids that have passion for the game How hard a player plays on both ends, how well they communicate and how athletic they are. I look for a kid that works hard and shows a lot of mental toughness.
Best part about recruiting for VCU? The university sells itself with great academics, great facilities and great administrative support. I absolutely love the challenge of surprising people with the level of talent we are able to recruit and sign. Being able to sell a program that has a tradition of being successful and sending young people out into the world to be successful.
Exactly how many cities did you travel to? 5 I think I lose count as I go, but I believe six. 7
Favorite city to recruit in? Chicago By far, Atlanta! That's my hometown, so no need for a GPS! I usually always catch up with family for dinner, too. It's a tie between Atlanta and Orlando.
Best meal you had during your travels? Filet mignon A seafood restaurant in Washington, D.C. I actually had time to sit down for a dinner; so tough to beat! Myself and Coach Cunningham went to Joe's Crab Shack and ate crab legs and shrimp in Orlando.
It's midnight and you've been in the gym for 15 hours, where you headed to grab a bite to eat? I'm headed to bed. 7-11 for a protien bar or Cheez-its and a Vitamin Water! I hate fast food, so that is usually my only choice that late. I'm going to sleep. I'll make sure I have a big breakfast in the morning.
Favorite in-flight movie? The back of my eye lids! Flights are the only time to catch up on sleep, so I pass out even before we take off! Dumb and Dumber
Best team name you ran into at the tournaments?
NYC Gauchos
Team Freckles always cracks me up!
Kamikazes
