RAMS TRAVEL TO HOFSTRA FOR PIVOTAL CAA MATCH-UP
Black & Gold need win to set up battle for first-place with Drexel on Thursday
2-22-09
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – In all athletics, there are games that classify as “trap games.” A game that might be overlooked by teams who are looking forward to a big-time match-up instead of focusing on the game at hand.
Sunday’s trip to Hofstra University might classify as that for the Virginia Commonwealth University women’s basketball team. The Rams find themselves winners of seven straight and sit in a tie atop the Colonial Athletic Association standings with Drexel at 12-2. The two teams are set to square Thursday night in Philadelphia, Pa.
VCU must focus on the Pride first though, a team that is coming off a 66-51 thrashing of Old Dominion last Thursday.
“Hofstra is one of the most talented teams in this league, especially when they are at home,” Head Coach Beth Cunningham said. “We have do what we’ve done all year and stay focused on the task at hand.”
In order to do that, the Rams will have to rely on the senior tandem of Quanitra Hollingsworth (Chesapeake, Va.) and Radoslava Bachvarova (Varna, Bulgaria) who have combined for nearly 28 points and 15 rebounds per game during VCU’s current seven-game winning streak.
Junior Jess Fuller and freshman Nicole Capurso lead a balanced Pride scoring attack, scoring 12.1 and 10.8 points a game respectively. Along with Fuller on the front line is freshman Joelle Connelly who is pouring in 8.7 points and grabbing 6.2 rebounds per game.
Hofstra has been outstanding in the confines of the Mack Sports Complex, boasting an 8-3 mark at home this year.
Game time in Hempstead, N.Y. is set for 2 p.m.
