RAMS HEAD TO DELAWARE LOOKING TO STAY ATOP CAA STANDINGS
Black & Gold featured on TV for first time this season
2-07-09
NEWARK, Del. – In order to be at the top of the Colonial Athletic Association standings at the end of the regular season, teams must be able to win on the road.
For the Virginia Commonwealth University women’s basketball team, that task will rely on the ability to grind through a defensive battle as it heads north to take on the Fightin’ Blue Hens of the University of Delaware in a contest that features the top two defensive teams in the CAA.
VCU enters the game holding opponents to 55.1 points per game, just one-tenth of a point behind Delaware who holds opponents to 55.0 ppg.
The game will be the first time this season that the Black & Gold have been featured on TV as the 2 p.m. contest will be shown on the Comcast Network.
The Rams’ task will be even tougher as they learned late Friday that they will be without the services of junior forward D’Andra Moss (Atlanta, Ga.) for the remainder of the season. Moss suffered a torn ACL and meniscus in VCU’s home win over UNC Wilmington.
Leading VCU offensively will be the senior tandem of Quanitra Hollingsworth (Chesapeake, Va.) (right) and Radoslava Bachvarova (Varna, Bulgaria), who are combining for 24.6 points and 11.7 rebounds per outing.
Hollingsworth is on the brink of history as the veteran only needs two rebounds to become the first player in VCU women’s basketball history to eclipse the 1,000-point, 1,000-rebound plateau.
Head Coach Beth Cunningham will also be looking to capture her 100th career-win, extending her record for most wins by a VCU head coach.
In order to do so the Rams must be able to deal with a tough Delaware team that has won six of the seven meetings between the two schools at the Bob Carpenter Center.
The Fightin’ Blue Hens are winners of three of the past four contests, but dropped a 68-45 decision to VCU at the Siegel Center back on Jan. 18th.
Sophomores Tesia Harris and Vanessa Kabongo are combining for 24.3 points, 10.2 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game to lead the Delaware offensive attack.
Game time at the Bob Carpenter Center is set for 2 p.m. |
