SNEED, VCU OVERCOME SLOW START, SURGE TO NINTH STRAIGHT WIN

Score: VCU 3, Rhode Island 1 (20-25, 25-12, 26-24, 25-18)
Location: Kingston, R.I. (Keaney Gym)
Records: VCU 13-7 (8-0 Atlantic 10), Rhode Island 7-13 (1-7)

The short story: Junior middle blocker Jasmin Sneed exploded for a career-high 12 blocks and VCU roared back from an early deficit Friday night to capture its ninth straight win.

OPENING VOLLEY

  • Rhode Island could not contain Sneed. The 6-foot-1 Texan led a VCU blocking attack that was credited with 17.5 rejections. In addition, Sneed hit .462 with eight kills
  • Not to be outdone, junior opposite Gina Tuzzolo recorded nine blocks and eight kills, while senior outside hitter Vicky Giommarini added a team-high 11 kills, as well as 10 digs and five blocks
  • In all, four VCU players were credited with five or more blocks
  • On the back row, freshman libero Alyna Draper dug 17 balls and served up three aces
  • Hazel Brown recorded eight kills and eight digs for Rhode Island

THE DIFFERENCE

  • VCU outblocked Rhode Island 17.5 to 10.0
  • Rhode Island could do little against VCU's defense. Rhody hit a paltry -.026 in the match
  • The host team held VCU to a .121 hitting percentage in the first set and closed the frame with a 7-3 burst to earn a 25-20 win and a 1-0 match lead. But VCU responded accordingly. The Black and Gold hit .300 and held Rhody to just two kills on the way to a 25-12 triumph in the second
  • Rhode Island threatened to move ahead once more late in the third when it erased a big VCU lead to knot the set at 24-all. But Giommarini answered with a kill on the ensuing play and Rhode Island mishandled a set after that to give VCU a 26-24 victory

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
