The short story: Sophomore Julia Adler smacked 12 kills and registered four blocks to lead VCU, which fell to Rhode Island in a hotly contested match between two of the Atlantic 10 Conference's best teams.

OPENING VOLLEY
  • Adler was one of three VCU players to record at least 10 kills. Vicky Giommarini (11) and Alica Kandler (10) also crossed that threshold. Giommarini added nine digs, two blocks and a service ace.
  • Sophomore Tori Baldwin provided a match-high seven blocks for the Black and Gold.
  • VCU setters Tyler Sroufe and Dajah Ard combined for 38 assists and 21 digs.
  • Audrey Castro sparked Rhode Island with 21 kills.
THE DIFFERENCE
  • VCU led the final set 13-10, but a kill by Castro keyed a 4-0 Rhode Island burst. A kill by Giommarini stabilized VCU momentarily, but an attack error and a kill by Rhody's Layne Self clinched a 16-14 win for the visitors.
  • Rhode Island outhit VCU .192-.032 in the fifth set. Castro provided three kills on five swings for Rhode Island in the tiebreaker.
  • VCU trailed 2-1 in the match before striking back.
  • Double blocks by Adler and Baldwin bookended a 5-0 rally midway through the fourth set that pushed VCU to a 15-12 lead. Although Rhody would retake the lead, VCU answered with a 4-0 push that included kills from Adler, Jasmin Sneed and Gina Tuzzolo to assume a 23-19 advantage on the way to a 25-20 win.
  • VCU outblocked Rhode Island 12.5-8.0. Rhody outhit the Black and Gold .201-.158 in the match.
QUOTABLE
"We did a lot of good things at times, but there were others where we need to make better decisions. It was a good match for us because we haven't been in that position before, and it was good to see them battle back, but we came up short. You could really tell Rhode Island had all those seniors out there. But we can't do anything about the result now. We've just got to get back in the gym and get better." – VCU Coach Jody Rogers
