SAINT LOUIS, RYGELSKI ‘KILL’ EARLY VCU LEAD

Score: Saint Louis 3, VCU 1 (13-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-15)
Location: Richmond, Va. (E.J. Wade Arena at the Stuart C. Siegel Center)
Records: VCU 13-10 (4-3 A-10), Saint Louis 10-12 (5-2)

The short story: VCU recorded a season-high 17 blocks, including nine from sophomore middle Tori Baldwin, but the Rams couldn't hold back Saint Louis and NCAA kills leader Danielle Rygelski Sunday at the Siegel Center.

OPENING VOLLEY
  • Freshman Jasmin Sneed and junior Alica Kandler provided eight kills apiece for VCU, which hit .172 in the match.
  • Sneed added six blocks, including a solo, and a pair of service aces.
  • In all, three Rams booked at least six blocks. VCU has registered 10 or more blocks in a match nine times this season.
  • Junior libero Rebekah Strange dug 18 balls for the Rams.
  • VCU contained Rygeliski early, but the senior outside hitter eventually piled up 24 kills in the match and keyed a number of critical Saint Louis runs. She also produced six digs, four blocks and two aces.
THE DIFFERENCE
  • VCU bottled up Rygelski early effectively, using a myriad of blockers to hold her to five kills and seven hitting errors in the first set. VCU cruised to a 25-13 win in that frame.
  • Rygelski got on track early in the second set. She keyed an early run with a series of back row attacks as the Billikens overcame an early 5-1 deficit to take a 10-9 lead. Saint Louis would eventually take that set 25-20 as Rygelski piled up eight kills on 12 swings.
  • In the third, it was Rygelski on the service line when the Billikens staged a 9-0 blitz to grab a 19-16 advantage.
  • The Rams hit .304 in the first set, but recorded a .141 percentage the rest of the way.
WHAT'S NEXT
VCU will regroup and head to George Washington on Friday, Oct. 21. The Rams topped the Colonials 3-0 at the Seigel Center on Oct. 9.
