The short story: Junior Rebekah Strange bolstered the VCU back line with 28 digs, the most by a Ram in six years, and classmate Alica Kandler provided 16 important kills as the Black and Gold outlasted High Point Tuesday night.

OPENING VOLLEY
  • Strange's big night proved crucial in a match dictated by defense. VCU dug 70 balls in the contest, and Strange was one of four Rams to record double-digit digs. She registered 19 digs in the final two sets as VCU took command of the match.
  • Strange also finished with eight assists and four aces.
  • Defensive specialist Madalon Simpson was also strong on the back row. The freshman from Louisville, Kentucky was credited with 13 digs
  • Kandler, a transfer from Daytona State College, hit .279 and collected 11 digs. Sophomores Sahbria McLetchie and Julia Adler spiked 12 and 10 kills, respectively, for the Rams.
  • The match marked VCU's 2016 home opener.
THE DIFFERENCE
  • VCU limited the Panthers to a .106 hitting percentage.
  • The Rams outblocked High Point 12-8 and outdug the Panthers 70-49.
  • The Black and Gold stunned High Point in the opening set, rallying from a 24-21 deficit to capture a 27-25 win. Kills by Adler, McLetchie and Kandler, as well as a double block by Tori Baldwin and Tyler Sroufe helped complete an improbable comeback. The Rams trailed 11-4 at one point in the set.
  • VCU dropped the hammer in the third. Strange helped break open a close set when she served up eight consecutive points – three on service aces. When it was over, the Rams owned an 18-10 lead. VCU won that set 25-15 and eventually finished off the Panthers in four.
